INTRODUCTION

Not all authority that speaks in spiritual language is relationally safe.

The New Testament does not warn us merely about false doctrine, but about false authority — authority that governs without love, corrects without relationship, and claims spiritual insight without accountability.

Abiding Relationship Theology (A.R.T.) exists to restore relational wisdom, rooted in James 3:17, where authority is peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy.

WHAT SCRIPTURE MEANS BY FALSE AUTHORITY

Scripture links rebellion to witchcraft not to sensationalize the topic, but to reveal the nature of control.

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft…”
— 1 Samuel 15:23 (KJV)

Biblically, witchcraft is not primarily about rituals.
It is about power sourced outside obedience to God — especially the attempt to control people rather than serve them.

False authority operates when leadership:

  • Demands submission without relationship

  • Uses fear rather than love

  • Claims insight without process

  • Governs people instead of walking with them

CHRIST’S MODEL OF RELATIONAL CORRECTION

Jesus gave a clear relational framework:“If thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone…”
— Matthew 18:15 (KJV)

Correction begins:

  • Privately

  • Relationally

  • Redemptively

Public accusation without private relationship is not Christ’s method.

THE SPIRIT OF RESTORATION

Paul reinforces this relational posture:

“Restore such an one in the spirit of meekness…”
— Galatians 6:1 (KJV)

True authority is gentle.
It is aware of its own vulnerability.
It seeks restoration, not exposure.

WALKING IN THE LIGHT TOGETHER

“If we walk in the light… we have fellowship one with another.”
— 1 John 1:7 (KJV)

Walking in the light means:

  • Transparency

  • Openness

  • Willingness to be questioned

  • Shared accountability

False authority avoids the light and labels inquiry as rebellion.

A RELATIONAL DISCERNMENT CHECKLIST

This checklist is offered for self-examination first.

Warning Signs

  • Correction without relationship

  • Accusations without conversation

  • Fear-based compliance

  • No pathway for appeal

  • Spiritual language used to silence questions

Healthy Authority

  • Willingness to meet privately

  • Scripture used humbly

  • Gentle correction

  • Openness to dialogue

  • Protection of dignity

PASTORAL NOTE

This teaching is not a license to accuse leaders or divide communities.

Discernment without love becomes the very control it seeks to avoid.

Abiding Relationship Theology calls believers to:

  • Self-governance

  • Humility

  • Relational maturity

  • Walking in the light together

CONCLUSION

True authority does not need to dominate.
It serves, invites, and restores.

Any authority that bypasses love, truth, and relationship has departed from the model of Christ.

Abiding in Him produces peace — not fear.
